The State of Utah is writing a success story when it comes to cracking down on fraudsters. Since opening the doors of its Department of Insurance Fraud Division in February, the department has filed charges in more than 30 cases. Dozens more are in process and projections call for 100 prosecutions in the first year of operation.
In response to insurance industry complaints about the number of fraudulent claims, industry officials and the DOI have agreed to cooperate in the establishment of a fraud unit. In short, the companies will fund it if the state will staff and run it.
The unit was established through company donations totaling $400,000. The state contributed by providing the expert prosecutorial services of Assistant US Attorney General, Dave Gardner. David Lattin, formerly with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, joined the team as director. Additional expansion included the hiring of three investigators, a research specialist and a legal aide.
An 800 number is operational and companies with suspected insurance fraud cases in the state of Utah are urged to use it.
