Hugh Clarence Johnson: pilot, Vietnam veteran, former president of two veteran’s associations and the Cotati Chamber of Commerce, member of numerous professional organizations … ex-convict … and the list goes on to suggest an interesting 55-year life.
Johnson, who practices naturalopathics (the art of natural medicine), faced accusations of practicing medicine in 1992 and 1993 without a license at his area business, the Cotati Health Care Clinic. It seems that when Johnson hired a physician, he (Johnson) took the liberty of calling in prescriptions using the physician’s medical license numbers. An undercover investigation also revealed that Johnson was diagnosing illnesses, deciding which medicines to prescribe, practicing physical therapy without a license, practicing medicine without a license—and forging the seal of the state of California.
When the Cotati clinic closed, Johnson simply went to Idaho and opened another clinic. It all recently caught up to him, however, when he was arrested and charged with 50 counts—including insurance fraud.
In a plea bargain arrangement, Johnson pleaded no contest to five felonies and three misdemeanors. The rest of the charges will be dismissed at the scheduled November 22 sentencing. Johnson faces up to seven years in prison.
