It was the computer glitch to end all computer glitches. More than 800 customers of First National Bank of Chicago became sudden billionaires. One gentleman, a computer technician, called the automated voice information system and was told his account balance was $924,844,208.32 – not bad for a few days work.

So what if the bank’s holding company, First Chicago NBD Corp., only has about a billion and a half in assets. They could have made payments…

It was reportedly the largest computer glitch in the history of banking. Unfortunately for the 800 customers involved, it was corrected in short order.
