It was a darn good scam – while it lasted. Brothers Norris “Mickey” Melancon and Robin Melancon have been carted off to jail and ordered to pay fines of $3,000 each for their roles in a rebate scheme.
DuPont had instituted a rebate program called the Growers Choice Cash Incentive Program in which farmers who use certain agricultural fertilizers and chemicals are entitled to cash back. All the farmer needed to do was send in the invoice to prove product purchase and “the check was in the mail.”
The brothers Melancon, owners of Feed Services, Inc. in New Roads, are accused of creating phony farm names (False River Acres, among others), filling out fraudulent invoices, and claiming DuPont rebate money. Each pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud.
