On April 25, Michael Schreiber, the owner of Schreiber Coach Works, a south Florida body shop, pleaded no contest to two felony charges of insurance fraud.
Schreiber’s argument was that insurance companies dominate the market and decide exactly how much will be spent to fix a car. He then claimed that he falsified the estimates only in order to assure his customers could get a first rate repair job done on their cars.
The judge sentenced Schreiber to five years probation and $100,000 in fines to cover insurance company restitution and investigative expense.
The arrest and sentencing of Schreiber was the result of a 15-month sting operation in which cooperative efforts were waged by Miami DIF, NICB, ITT Hartford, Nationwide, US Security, State Farm, Travelers and USAA.
