For those readers dealing in foreign claims, it helps to know that the American system of six-digit Gregorian calendar dating (i.e. 040195) varies widely by country.  In fact, a large portion of the world uses alternative dating systems.

For instance…

ETHIOPIA

In this country, where they follow the Julian calendar, it is currently 1987.  New Year’s day, and the start of 1988, will occur in September.

ISRAEL

The year is now 5755 in Israel.  The twelve months each have 28 days (lunar cycle).  Obviously, this leaves over a number of days at the end of the year.  The problem is solved with a leap year solution, but rather than a single day (February 29) being added every four years, the Israelis add an extra month approximately every three years (specifically, 7 years out of every 19 years).  In these leap-month years, there is a second month of Adar, referred to Adar II.)

The New Year is celebrated in early fall.  Most American calendars will reflect the Jewish New Year as Rosh Hashana.  In 1995, the Jewish year of 5756 will begin on September 25.

Medical bills, death certificates, etc., from Israel will ususally show both dates (theirs and ours).

MIDDLE EAST

Most countries, with the exception of Israel, use the Muslim calendar—also known as the Hejira calendar.  This calendar, too, is a lunar calendar and this year’s New Year occurred on 5/31/95.  Dates on Middle Eastern documents will currently reflect a year of 1416.

TAIWAN

The Republic of Taiwan was founded 84 years ago, in 1911.  Thus, their year is now shown as 84.  The New Year’s celebration (and year change) is on January 1.

Contestable death claims should be examined closely and should reflect this 11 year discrepancy if the supporting documentation is valid and originates in Taiwan.  The same holds true for accident reports, hospital bills, or any similar supportive documentation.

THAILAND

The Buddhist calendar is in use in Thailand and the year is now 2538.  In most cases, the 25 is not shown and only an abbreviation (in a current case, “38”) will be written.
