Cranston, Rhode Island, police officer Kevin Grant and Tara Devoren, his former girlfriend, tell completely different stories of events that transpired beginning May 6, 1994.
This is what she said: Devoren claims that when her Chevy Blazer was stolen, Grant instructed her to fill out the police report in such a way that it showed some of his personal belongings were in the truck. The $2800 he collected from his insurance company was fraud, she said, since the items had never really been in the truck.
This is what he said: Baloney. It was just a romance gone sour and she, as a jilted lover, was making false accusations against him.
And this is what the jury said: Grant was not guilty of the charges of obtaining money under false pretenses and soliciting a bogus theft-loss report from his former girlfriend.
