When hiring translators for recorded statements, depositions or other legal proceedings, take the time to thoroughly check the credentials of the individual translator.
One company reports that the legal administrator of a “less-than-Kosher” law office took a part time job with an independent translator company. Said company, who knew absolutely nothing about this translator’s other job/life, contracted him to do cases which involved the very legal office he worked for. In other words, the insurance company was paying the legal administrator-turned-translator to translate his own client’s statements!
It seems that the law office kept seeing translators assigned from the same independent company and thought they’d take advantage of the situation.
It is important to note that the independent translator service is innocent; it’s their bilingual worker who’s guilty. At least four cases of this scam have been reported.
