After two Florida insurance executives from Aanco Underwriters were found guilty, it came time to pass sentencing. The men had been charged — and convicted — of large scale falsification of records so that clients could obtain lower insurance premiums.

A Florida judge heard the two tales of woe.

Charles Amos, in a wheelchair because of multiple sclerosis, had lived through a bout with cancer and survived two gunshot wounds inflicted by his own son, Jonathan “Jay” Amos, in a murder attempt. He watched his wife die at the hands of his son’s knife-wielding accomplice. A prison sentence in his present precarious medical condition would be akin to a death sentence, claimed his attorney.

And John “Jack” Fessenden was a family man with five children and a tireless volunteer in the community. Fessenden had barely avoided bankruptcy since his troubles began and had only been following orders.

But the judge went along with the Prosecutor’s reasoning that Amos was also in a wheelchair when he committed his crimes; he sentenced Amos to 15 years in prison. The judge also ordered that upon eventual parole, Amos must pay back $2.8 million that he took from insurers in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida. And Fessenden, too, despite his good deeds, was sentenced according to state guidelines and given a jail term of 4-1/2 years.
