Michael Kelleher, formerly an adjuster with Chubb & Son Federal Insurance Company in Long Island, New York, may have moved a few extra boxes of paper when he moved his residence to Vero Beach, Florida. Green paper!
In mid October, Kelleher was arrested on a charge of capital sexual battery relating to the rape of a 5 year old girl earlier in the year. Police, armed with a search warrant, came to Kelleher’s home searching for anything that might relate to the charge at hand. An Indian River County Sheriffs’ Deputy reported in an affidavit, “There was such an extremely large amount of cash located and hidden throughout Michael Kelleher’s residence, it would have been impossible to arrive at a total dollar amount without the assistance of an automated cash counter. “Since the money did not appear to be related to the rape charge, officers released it to Kelleher’s daughter, also a resident of the house.
Further checking revealed that Kelleher had been charged with mail fraud and tax evasion for his part in a nine year fraud scheme estimated to have cost Chubb & Son about $15 million. Kelleher had been ordered to repay nearly $1 million but had not yet done so. Detectives returned to the home with a new search warrant, hoping to pick up the money seen earlier.
Surprise, surprise. Both Kelleher’s daughter and the massive amount of cash, estimated at $600,000, were long gone.
