In one of the largest crackdowns on insurance fraud in the state’s history, Florida insurance fraud investigators went looking for 63 suspects in cities and towns throughout the state.
Included in the massive sweep were attorneys, chiropractors, runners, agents and participating patients. The undercover investigation was part of the push to stem the tide of fraud schemes washing across the Sunshine state. Companies playing big parts were Progressive, Allstate and National insurance.
The DOI has some impressive statistics building for 1996. In the first nine months of the year, over 450 insurance fraud-related arrests have been made. Part of this success is attributable to the establishment of new anti-fraud squads. The seventh of these squads, the Professional Organized Fraud Investigative Team (PROFIT) was recently funded with a $539,000 state Legislature grant and will deal primarily with organized health care fraud rings operating in South Florida.
