The United States. Paradise. Land of opportunity. A new life for Russian immigrants lucky enough to come here. Alexander Shindman, 30, of Boca Raton, figured out how to claim a small piece of the American pie.
Shindman is accused of being the top dog in a scam that utilized high-pressure telemarketing sales tactics to get victims to purchase stock in a bogus firm called Globus Group, Inc. The Manhattan-based firm promoted itself as an Internet service linking importers to exporters, however it actually provided no services to anybody and was simply a shell company. By telling investors that Globus had just been awarded $12 million in an anti-trust lawsuit against AT&T, the scam artists were able to increase the value of the NASDAQ listed stock from 25 cents to a high of $8 — and then sell it at the inflated price.
Igor Stolyar and Alik Stolyar, charged along with Shindman, were also accused of using the telephone to solicit murder. When rivals attempted to muscle in on the business, the two Stolyars allegedly attempted to make arrangements to have a hit man take care of the competition.
The FBI made the arrests.
