Over 700 fraud fighters gathered recently at the Burbank Hilton to hear the annual “State of the NICB” message. Here are some of the things said:
“We had the highest rates and the lowest benefits (workers’ compensation coverages in California). We were able to crack down on fraud and rates went down 60 percent almost overnight. If
we’re pushing down hard on workers’ compensation fraud, the criminal is going to go elsewhere to another kind of fraud so we must remain ever vigilant.”

“We have to work together, the private sector, law enforcement and the insurance industry, if in fact we are going to solve this problem. Partnership is the way to go. Together we can solve
the problem.”
Dwight “Spike” Helmick, Jr.

“We need unique solutions to the problem of detecting, preventing and deterring insurance related crime. Our experience has been that task forces are the most effective means of
combating these crimes.”
and on the All Claims Data Base…
“It will be less expensive. It will be better. There is no downside. There’s a tremendous upside.”

“Our state of the art data center, composed of over seven billion records, handles over $1 billion in claims statistics for 2,000 insurers, 1,500 self insureds, Fortune 500 companies,
public agencies and municipalities. We have 56 million bodily injury records and add 18 million more each year. We have 9 million property records and add 2.9 million each year.”

Comments on the Panther Investigation … “When would you expect to find a chain reaction auto accident, on an offramp in Little Saigon, where three of the four vehicles contained
claimants of only Middle Eastern descent? The Orange County grand jury returned 15 separate indictments on 86 individuals. This is the largest insurance fraud crime in the history of
California.”
“An important point to emphasize is that NICB is an important catalyst in bringing together the private sector with the public sector being affected by this crime. We have to have
communication.”

“Our goal is to have that technology link between our people and our resources.”
