The Coalition Against Insurance Fraud estimated that $877 million per annum went to fraudsters. In response to the existing problem, and in hopes of avoiding an escalation, New Mexico recently passed a law which provides for a state fraud unit.
Up and running on July 1, the new unit is funded by a $500,000 annual budget. One thing that’s very different about the NM unit, however, is the intention to outsource some of the investigation and prosecutorial duties.
Under the expert tutelage of Director John Tull, a former elected prosecutor, NM joins the list of states with active fraud bureaus.
