Lisa Carver, a young blind woman, thought she had found the man of her dreams. He was a young retired dentist; he was kind; he wanted to marry her; he would be a marvelous father to her son; and he had inherited $320 million.
Lisa herself had a tidy sum in her own bank account, $1.1 million. She’d received the money from the proceeds of a medical malpractice suit.
Lisa met the man, Robert W. Best, through the mail and they corresponded regularly. What he cleverly hid, however, was his true place of residence. Best was writing to Lisa from a Florida prison. He never mentioned his extensive criminal record and he never mentioned his 19-year-old girlfriend.
Upon release, Best was able to convince Lisa to trust him with her fortune. He promised to wisely invest the money on her behalf.
Then, invest he did … in a Rolls Royce, a Rolex watch studded with 50 diamonds, a gold Faberge egg, a crystal paperweight, a Harley-Davidson motorcycle with matching accessories, a Corvette, a Mercedes, a BMW, a Toyota convertible and two new pick-up trucks.
In October, Best pled guilty to 26 counts of wire fraud, unlawful transactions and an unlawful credit card application. He also agreed to forfeit his ill-gotten gains. He will be sentenced on March 21, and even though she won’t be able to see the proceedings, Lisa plans to attend the sentencing.
