Robert Joseph Benge, Joseph Benge, Joseph Benges, Joseph Bengen, Robert Joseph and Jimmy Flippen – who just happen to be one individual – was convicted by a Pima County Jury of four counts of fraud. Benge and his mother, Wanda Alessi, teamed up to stage slip and fall accidents at numerous Arizona retail establishments.
A portion of the evidence against Benge was provided as part of his mother’s plea bargain on eight fraud counts. Alessi admitting staging accidents with her son and helping him collect insurance proceeds. She admitted using various names, such as Rene Stuart, Michelle Michalotti and Rene Alessi, to hide her true identity. She also agreed to pay restitution up to $225,000 to 58 businesses and hospitals from all over the United States. Mother and son face a combined prison sentence of 307 years!
The investigation and prosecution was handled by the Arizona Department of Insurance and the Office of the Attorney General respectively.
