DEFINITELY NOT THE SMARTEST CRACKER IN THE BOX
Dauphin County, PA, has an estimated population of 270,000. These Harrisburg area residents include one particular dentist, Donald Dinello Jr. of Hummeltown, who has been arrested for writing — over and over and over — the same word on prescription pads bearing his name. Oxycodone, oxycodone, oxycodone. Enough times to remove all pain from a heavily populated neighborhood or two.
After hearing testimony and seeing evidence showing 71 scripts, equaling 2,700 pills, were written for one of his employees who had back pain — and just in case she didn’t have enough, the sympathetic doctor also wrote her husband at least 17 prescriptions (140 tablets) and more than 400 tablets of varying strengths of the same drug — a grand jury recommended criminal charges including two counts of administering, dispensing, or prescribing a controlled substance not in accordance with treatment principles accepted by a responsible medical professional, one count of failure to keep records of distribution of controlled substances, one count of theft by unlawful taking or disposition, and one count of theft by failure to make required disposition of funds.of prescription drugs. Nobody seems sure of when dentists were authorized to treat back pain. Back teeth? Maybe. Back BACK? Nope.
And when it comes to “the tooth, the tooth, and nothing but the tooth,” the not-so-good doctor didn’t stop there. He is also accused of stealing dental supplies from Oral Surgery Associates and not bothering to tell his partner in that practice that he was selling those supplies at a discount to another office where he was also employed and pocketing the $55,000 realized from those sales.
