The California Senate Judiciary Committee voted 3 to 5 late at night on June 21 to kill Assembly Bill 2843. The bill was sponsored by The California Union of Safety Employees and had easily passed the Assembly.
Until the late 1960’s, any California peace officer could record conversations during the course of investigations. The law was changed so only sheriffs and regular police could “wear a wire” without special authorization.
AB2843 would have added four classes of state employees to those with unrestricted access to recording. Currently, these investigators must obtain permission from the sheriff or district attorney in each county to record investigations undercover.
