1995…only days away as we go to press with our January/February issue – and already here as you read these pages. This is our fifth edition and, once again, the response and support has been overwhelming. Our subscriber bulk mailing is now reaching 45 states (as well as Washington DC and Puerto Rico) and four of the Canadian provinces.
Industry-serving publications have one of the highest business mortality rates. So much so, in fact, that the “how to start a business” books say “don’t bother” – because of the 87 percent first-year failure rate for such endeavors. When we started, there were many unanswered questions:
Will the industry take this mysterious John Cooke guy seriously enough to share its secrets in written form? Honestly, we weren’t sure back in April. But this concern has been laid to rest. We recognize, however, that we have an inherent responsibility to uphold if we are to continue to earn your trust and confidence. By strict adherence to our mission statement, “Fighting Fraud through Communication and Education,” we believe we can meet that responsibility. Our featured writers list, including a potpourri of well-respected industry names, tells us it’s working.
Won’t you run out of articles and information after two or three issues? Certainly, this has proven to be the least of our worries. Virtually every day, and sometimes every hour, the mail, phone or fax brings us yet another new story idea – another kind of fraud. If there is any one of you who thinks (s)he’s seen it all…think again. Until April 1994, we thought exactly that. Just eight months have elapsed since John Cooke was born and we (painful to the ego) realize that we are but babes in the woods. Despite the most heroic and brilliant of efforts, insurance fraud is – and forever will be – here to stay. Will we run out of story ideas and material? No chance.
The past two months have been fascinating.
The NHCAA Conference in New Orleans brought a valuable lesson home; the Health Care insurance industry and the Property/Casualty insurance industry are fighting the same enemies. Perhaps the best weapon in our mutual arsenal is that of communication.
The trip to our 50th state was an eye-opener. There is nothing truly unique about the Hawaiian insurance fraud plight. Hawaii is where California was 15 years ago, where Florida was ten years ago, where Washington was one year ago, where other fertile fraud states may be two to three years hence. There is one thing though, no matter what the geography, that remains a constant:
The first step of change is that of education.
“Fighting insurance fraud through communication and education”.
Hmmm? Now where have we heard that before?
