They lived in a $400,000 home, owned two more rental homes, had a hefty savings account and a good income from a law practice. Why she filed for Medi-Cal to cover the births of their three children is a mystery.
Medi-Cal is California’s medical insurance for poor people.
Newport Beach attorney Frank B. Lawrence Jr. and his wife, Kim E. Lawrence, were hardly poor. Yet in 1987, 1992 and 1995, the state paid an approximate total of $100,000 on the Lawrence’s behalf.
The hospital staff at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian became suspicious when Mom, in labor with child number three, checked in as a Medi-Cal patient and then made references to her maid and her attorney/husband. The hospital reported its suspicions to California’s Department of Health and Human Services and a year-long investigation ensued.
The Lawrences are charged with three counts each of fraud, conspiracy to commit fraud and grand theft. Kim Lawrence also is facing one count of perjury.
