Delta Dental Plan of California didnUt waste any time when it suspected wrongdoing on the part of Russell F. Moon, D.D.S. of Malibu. Delta just … told the FBI.
The investigation began with a patient complaint. Delta sent one of its regional dental consultants to Dr. Moon’s office to conduct a clinical review of patient records. Upon completion of the audit, there was reason to suspect that the dentist was filling his pocket cavities at the expense of Delta, CNA, Travelers, Prudential, MassMutual and The Equitable.
Moon was found to be billing dental insurers for far more treatment than he ever rendered to his patients as well as for procedures that were allegedly done on days the patients never came to his office.
The doctor recently pleaded guilty to eight counts of health care fraud in US District Court. And the California Delta folks are continuing their team work with the FBI. Another $2 million worth of dental fraud involving various other providers is currently being investigated.
