We have fielded hundreds of phone calls since the premiere issue of “The John Cooke Fraud Report” rolled off the presses at the beginning of June. And, by far, the most asked question was “Who is John Cooke?”
At least a few investigators tried running John’s name through their own data banks and some national registers. Another came calling on our neighbors. Why – we think it’s just the nature of the investigative beast.
To those who were straightforward enough to call, identify themselves and ask, an honest answer was given. We offer it now, in print for all to see, so those few die-hard investigators can get back to the important business at hand and quit wasting their valuable time looking for a person who … DOES NOT EXIST.
John Cooke was “born” for two reasons. The first, quite simply, is that our principals could not initially agree on what to name the planned publication. The second, and by far the most important, is that there is a security issue involved. By following our own mission statement, “Fighting Fraud Through Communication and Education,” we are, if we are successful at what we are trying to do, messing with and causing distress to the bad guys. And that could be dangerous.
And that is how – and why – John Cooke came out of the hat. It looked like a good name. It looked like a strong name. It evoked a Mannix P.I.-like vision of a guy who was bound and determined to stop fraud in its tracks.
What is important at this juncture is that John Cooke is a spirit, one that is a part of each and every one of us. He is fed-up-to-here with funding insurance fraud by paying 30 percent more of his hard-earned money in premiums. He is tired of the fact that, despite quoted fraud numbers which reach into the tens of billions of dollars, there has heretofore been no widely circulated medium of information. And he is strongly committed to the concept of “a little education can go a long way in fighting fraud.”
And so our founders decided to mortgage the farm, put their money where their mouths were, decide on a name and birth “The John Cooke Fraud Report.”
Their 60-plus years of combined insurance experience, coupled with professional designations of CPCU and CFE, added to multiple educational degrees and specialized training in fraud investigation, and with a dash of national-award-winning journalism talents, mix up to produce the product that you’re holding in your hand.
“The John Cooke Fraud Report” is here to report facts, to offer a medium of communication among an increasingly wide industry, and to provide a forum of interesting and educational material. We are here to do everything in our power to put the brakes on an epidemic disease that permeates our society. We are here to make a difference.
Please help us. Insurance fraud should be everybody’s business, not just John Cooke’s.
