It started when Progressive donated $25,000 to the state police to assist in setting up a sting operation. It ended in the arrests of 40 people and the recovery of over $1 million in stolen cars.
Operation Beacon, which spanned 18 months, used a task force approach. Efforts were coordinated between a dozen municipal police departments, state prosecutors, the NICB, Progressive and Chubb.
Since the operation began in early 1995, the Connecticut Regional Auto Theft Task Force has recovered over 350 stolen cars and made over 500 felony arrests – and the state’s auto theft rate decreased by 12.5 percent.
