Alikim Media began publication of The John Cooke Financial Fraud Report in August 1996. Similar in format to The John Cooke Insurance Fraud Report, Financial gets into the nitty-gritty of all those types of fraud concerning money: bank schemes, counterfeiting, credit card scams, money laundering, bunco and more.
And so it was that I recently found myself addressing the full assemblage at the International Association of Financial Crime Investigators (IAFCI) annual conference. The IAFCI bears similarities to the IASIU. Held this year in Nashville, the IAFCI gathering was much the same as September’s Charlotte IASIU meeting will be. While the faces are different, the topic matter is strikingly similar. IAFCI presented seminars on organized crime—just like IASIU will. IAFCI gathered to talk about cultural issues—just like IASIU will. In fact, a large number of the topics presented in Nashville will be covered in Charlotte.
One of the comments I made to the IAFCI group concerned the value and need of communication—not only within the financial fraud-fighting industry, but between sister industries. I was, of course, referring to those of us in the insurance fraud-fighting arena; however, the message goes both ways.
We have the same agenda. We fight the same crooks. And for a better future, we must open the dialogue between our industries. So readers, please do me—and yourselves—a great favor. Take a credit card investigator to lunch or invite a member of your bank’s security department to your next local industry meeting. There’s a whole world of help out there that is virtually untapped.
Teach, listen, learn and share. Such is the future if we are to win our common war against fraud.
