An amorous burglar dialed himself into the hands of the police while robbing a Belgian soccer club. Apparently, he used the club’s phone—in mid-robbery—to call his girlfriend in Hungary. The thief escaped scot-free with his loot (including a radio, CDs, and even the telephone) for a few weeks until club officials spotted a 4,000 franc ($110) long-distance call. Police traced the call to a young woman who had a Hungarian boyfriend in Brussells. Confronted with the evidence, the sticky-fingered swain confessed. Then there’s the story of Chris Applewhite of New York. The saga started when Applewhite shot a 19-year-old man and fled the scene. Moments later, Applewhite himself was robbed at gunpoint (nice neighborhood?) and his leather jacket was stolen. So he went to the police station to report having been robbed—and was recognized as fitting the description of the individual who shot the 19-year-old. He was arrested; rightfully so, we think.
And how about Gloria Ross Tilley, a Baton Rouge cleaning woman who works for the service that cleans the police station. When Tilley came to work, cleaning the City Police Forgery Office, detectives arrested her. They recognized her as a suspect who had a penchant for opening up bogus checking accounts with bad checks and fake names. Without even passing “GO,” Tilley was booked into Parish Prison for felony theft, three counts of bank fraud and 14 counts of forgery.
