Excerpts from a recent report from California Attorney General Dan Lundgren:
- Russian organized crime has grown rapidly over the last five years, since the fall of communism.
- More than 200 of Russia’s more than 6,000 crime gangs operate with counterparts in 17 US cities and 14 US states.
- Active communication exists between Russian crime groups operating in the US.
- Four Russian “structured criminal organizations” are involved in insurance and medical fraud, prostitution, extortion, auto theft, credit card forgery, counterfeiting, money laundering, drug trafficking and murder.
- 600 to 800 major crime figures are operating in California.
- Tax fraud schemes alone cost the government $2 billion per year in revenues.
- International alliances have been formed with criminals in other countries: the Columbian cocaine distributors and the Sicilian Mafia have dealings with the Russians.
Convicted US mobster, John Gotti, was overheard on a wiretap during his 1992 trial saying, “We Italians will kill you, but the Russians are crazy. They’ll kill your whole family.“
