HE: David Carter, age 49; former Atlanta restaurateur, dogged by the federal government for many years; moved to Moscow just prior to being indicted in 1991; accused of 27 felony counts of making false statements using false Social Security numbers and fraudulently obtaining about $1 million in bank loans; arrested in Cyprus in April 1996 and extradited to the US to face charges.
SHE: Beverly Dwight, age 47; DeKalb County school psychologist; married Carter in the 1980s and lived with him in the Plaza Towers in the Buckhead section of Atlanta; relocated to Moscow with Carter prior to 1991 indictment; split with Carter in 1993; arrested in Russia in 1995 and deported to US to face charges; pled to a misdemeanor and agreed to testify against Carter; later became involved with …
THE OTHER MAN: Gerald Struchen, age 53; the federal investigator who dogged Carter for many years and built the case against him and Dwight; recently retired; currently living with Dwight.
THE TRIAL: Carter chose to represent himself at his federal jury trial. He often ranged far afield from the actual case, calling ex-wives and girlfriends as witnesses. Many questions he posed had to do with sex – so many, in fact, that the judge admonished Carter that she’d find him in contempt if he brought up sex one more time. He argued that Dwight was the driving force behind all of the fraudulent financial transactions and that all of the questioned loans were in Dwight’s name. Dwight countered that she had only signed papers when he instructed her to sign papers – and that her name was used because Carter himself had a questionable credit history.
Carter maintained that he was the victim of a government conspiracy. After his ex-wife (Dwight) was sentenced to probation, she began having an affair with the investigative agent (Struchen) who was pursuing him (Carter).
THE JURY: After deliberating for only two hours, they found Carter guilty of all charges. Sentencing was scheduled for February 19.
