Neelam (wife) and Sanjiv (hubby) Kakkar are in deep Kakkar. After purchasing the Brookdale Inn and Spa in 2007 for $5.3 million, things almost immediately started downhill. In the five intervening years, a 2009 fire destroyed 20 apartments and displaced 65 people, the couple has tangled with the California Department of Insurance over a cumulative $800,000 underpayment in workers’ comp premiums, the county code folks over multiple building code violations, the attorney general’s office, the State Employment Development Department, the Santa Cruz Superior Court over compliance issues, and the state Department of Fish and Game after a pipe backed up in the hotel’s kitchen, cleaning fluid was poured down a storm drain and flowed into Clear Creek, and an estimated 50 endangered steelhead trout were killed. The California Hubby is currently facing seven felony charges for insurance fraud, insurance premium fraud and claims fraud, while the Mrs. is charged with one felony count.
