Contrary to the informational biography we printed in our January/February issue, Paul Conway is not a Western States Supervisor with Fireman’s Fund.  Paul Conway is the National Director of the Workers’ Compensation SIU for Fireman’s Fund.  I point this out for two reasons.  First, Paul was a little bit surprised when he saw the Western States Supervisor title.  However, he behaved admirably (translation:  he did not shoot me) about the slight misprint and our correction is certainly in order.  Second, it affords us the opportunity to stress that we are only as good as our sources – and we go to extreme lengths to bring you, our readers, accurate information.

As you read the contents of this issue, please keep in mind the distinct difference between fact and opinion.  We readily print the former and occasionally print the latter.  Should we make an inadvertent error in the publication of fact, we will print a correction.  Should we print an opinion a reader disagrees with, we want to hear from that reader.  Depending on the nature of the subject and the nature of the disagreement, we may want to revisit the topic from an alternative perspective in a future issue.  Approaches will vary from claim to claim and from investigator to investigator.  And while we like to point our editorial finger in the right direction, we are certainly unable to define the path exactly.  In short, we recognize that there’s more than one way to skin a fraudster!

This issue marks the end of our first year.  It has truly been an astounding journey.  We have filled a total of 240 pages with stories, charts, facts, figures, pictures, ideas, hints, successes and services.  What began as a question mark, has become an explanation point.

I’d like to take this opportunity to close our first year with a heartfelt thank you to each and every one of you who has been a part of The John Cooke Fraud Report’s birth and a part of its growth.  The fraud-fighting industry has not only contributed to our success – they have been responsible for our success.  They have not only accepted us – they have embraced us.  But most importantly, the spirit that is John Cooke has taken on an identity that allows him a true role in the cooperative war being waged against the crime of insurance fraud.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to make a pledge.  John Cooke is one tough cookie and he’s here to stay.  We are going to continue to fill our future pages the same way we’ve filled our past pages:  in accordance with our mission statement, “Fighting fraud through communication and education.”
